Top 5 Repairs a Ductless AC May Need

An air conditioner is most likely to break down during the summers when the heat is unbearable. When the sweltering sun has you feeling uncomfortable in your own home, waiting to get the AC fixed is an added hassle. Prevent an AC breakdown with regular checkups and repairs.

Following are some common repairs that your ductless AC may need:

Air Filter Cleaning and Service

One of the most common repairs your AC may need is an air filter service. Air filters need to be cleaned every one to three months, depending on  your AC usage and the environment of where you live. A clogged air filter causes numerous problems and can result in costly repairs if not cleaned regularly. An air filter service will prevent this and may also extend the life of the air filter mesh installed in your split AC.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerants used in air conditioners are made of harmful chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons. If this leaks, it makes people vulnerable to the adverse effects of the chemicals. It can cause skin allergies and other health complications if not treated immediately. Refrigerant is also harmful to the environment.

Here are some signs that indicate a refrigerant leak:

  • You hear a hissing sound like air escaping from a balloon
  • Your AC starts leaking water
  • It takes longer than usual for the room to cool down
  • Warm air is coming out of the vents instead of cold
  • Your utility bill is higher than in previous months
  • There is ice on the refrigerant lines or any other part of the AC

If you hear or see any of these signs, call an HVAC technician immediately to have your refrigerant checked. Regular maintenance prevents refrigerant leaks, illustrating its importance.

Evaporator coil

The evaporator receives liquid refrigerant and creates low pressure. This turns the liquid refrigerant into a gas, which cools the air by absorbing heat from the atmosphere. This cold air is then blown into your home through the vents. It would be impossible for a ductless AC to cool the air if this process is hindered due to broken or malfunctioning evaporator coils.

Evaporator coils don’t need frequent repairs and may start working efficiently once the filter is cleaned or changed. De-icing may be required if the evaporator coil has frozen due to a refrigerant leak or low temperatures.

Condenser

After the evaporator absorbs heat from the air, the gas refrigerant moves into the condenser and turns back into a liquid. The condenser then releases the extra heat outdoors. Cleaning the condenser regularly is important because it is exposed to debris, dust, leaves, and other external environmental factors.

Blown Fuse

Electrical complications are common in ACs. Replacing the fuse with a new one will get your AC up and running in no time. However, a blown fuse may indicate the presence of a more serious problem, such as a condensing unit failure. Get your AC checked out by a technician for a thorough examination and a fuse replacement.
