How Serious Is a Refrigerant Leak?

Over time your air conditioner is likely to run into its fair share of trouble. Even with regular maintenance services each year, the best air conditioning system will still need repairs on occasion. One of the biggest repair needs that your AC unit may have is getting a refrigerant leak fixed.

Your AC is set up to have the perfect amount of refrigerant at the perfect pressure to last its entire lifespan. If the system starts to lose refrigerant, it will prove problematic. So how serious is a refrigerant leak? We are happy to explain so you know that this issue requires an immediate AC repair in Wake Forest, NC.

What creates refrigerant leaks

Refrigerant leaks are serious issues that can pop up in an air conditioning system, and they are unfortunately common. Regular use can cause enough wear and tear to create these leaks. Lines can wear out or develop leaks due to reactions with chemicals in a home’s air that cause corrosion. The end result is a refrigerant line that allows refrigerant to escape—which is never a good thing.

Why these leaks are so much trouble

Why are these leaks such a big problem? The key issue here is that a refrigerant leak can seriously hinder an air conditioner’s ability to cool a space. There are more specific issues that a leak can create though that will serve as indicators that an AC needs repairs.

For example, the biggest issue that can develop as a result of a refrigerant leak is short-cycling. Short-cycling refers to when an air conditioning system turns on and off again in short spurts. This is extremely hard on an air conditioner and will lead to an uncomfortable home with uneven cooling.

In addition to short-cycling, a refrigerant leak can also lead to the buildup of ice on the evaporator coil of an AC. It seems contradictory, but it is true. Without the appropriate amount of refrigerant in an air conditioner, the evaporator coil that cools the air will not be able to absorb enough heat. This leaves the remaining refrigerant in the coil too cold, causing moisture on the coil to freeze.

A refrigerant leak can also lead to an increase in energy bills. An air conditioner will have to work harder to cool a house because of a loss of refrigerant, which will cause it to consume more electricity.

It is easy to see that a refrigerant leak can be a serious and expensive issue the longer it is allowed to go unaddressed. Your best option when your AC develops a problem like this is to reach out to a professional technician to get it fixed.
